I built and ran this website between 2000 and 2001, combining passion for popular music and programming. It was listed by MTV's now defunct MusicNewswire as one of the then nascent web's top twenty sources, alongside Billboard and VH1. The most exciting part of it — for a 13/14-year-old excited by new music — was receiving scores of pre-release CDs from record companies. The entire project was written entirely from scratch (frameworks and libraries were not the norm back then!) in PHP linking to a MySQL database, with HTML as well as a little CSS and JavaScript for the frontend; the code is available here.

Hut Recordings 1991 - 2001
7 July 2001 | 0:00:00 GMT/UTC

'Hut Recordings - 1991-2001'Hut Recordings was launched in 1990 as a home for 'alternative' music. The label is home to the Verve, David Gray, Smashing Pumpkins, Placebo, Embrace, Gomez and a load more who all feature on this album.

This compilation is here to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the label.

It opens with I Am One, from the Smashing Pumpkins' classic debut album Gish.

Following is a track from David Gray. Taken from 1993's A Century Ends, it is Wisdom. An acoustic, happy, summery, uplifting number from Mr Gray.

David Boyd joined the label in June 1991. A couple of months after joining he heard a demo tape. He went to see the band play in Fulham. The band was signed to the label in August 1991. This band was the Verve whose History features on the album.

Track seven was the breakthrough single for Placebo, Nancy Boy from their self-titled album released in 1996. Following is Embrace's All You Good Good People, released as a single in 1998.

The diversity of the label shows in this tracklisting with Gomez following Embrace. Whippin' Piccadilly from Gomez's Bring It On album is featured.

Alone With Everybody was Richard Ashcroft's debut solo album. Brave New World, from the album, makes an appearance on this compilation.

One of the lesser-known artists on the label is Hobotalk whose excellent Lately More Than Ever is track number ten.

Crackout's Mr Rabies also features. It is taken from their debut limited edition EP released this year.

This album features the label's music from old to new (and in order). Hopefully we will hear a lot more from Hut Recordings.
